The G key is used in all metro games to wipe various grim off of your mask while wearing it in this game it also fixes the small hole when the mask hits zero health and a small hole forms. Without the workbench you can only put a sticker on the left side to repair it a bit. Only in the workbench can you repair completly if I'm not mistaken. on the controller, you hit the LB button to stick tape on the hole.
